Senate are stoked to announce the addition of new bassist Keith Gillam to the family. Keith is a killer musician, and a longtime friend to the band who has filled in for us on a couple of occasions in past years. We’ve been drooling over the prospect of having him on board for a number of years, and finally the timing is right for Keith to make this a permanent thing and we couldn’t be happier for us or for you fans!

For those of you who are good at math, this obviously means that we have to subtract Colin from the band. Colin has been a loyal member of the band for the past year and a bit, but did not appear on any of our recordings or contribute to any songwriting for the upcoming record.

We wish Colin the best of luck in future projects, and we are very excited to move forward with Keith knowing that the band will finally have the “dream rhythm section” that we always envisioned.

We’re tentatively slated to hit the studio in mid-late summer to do some pre-pro with famed producer Yannick St-Amand (Despised Icon, Beneath The Massacre), some of which may POSSIBLY surface as an EP or internet DL of some sort by the fall. We’re going to continue writing for the remainder of the summer and the plan is to have a new record out by Spring/Summer 2009!

The new material is an incredible progression from ‘Scenekill’ and sees us travelling down many different metallic paths. If Melo-death is considered a dying sub-genre, we’re going to do our best to put the final nail in the fucking coffin in 2009!!

Stay Tuned

Senate are saddened to announce the recent passing of our guitarist Jay Hudson's father after a lengthy battle with illness. We want to extend to him and his family our sincerest condolences.

Nothing in life is more important than family, and unfortunately we will have to cancel our May 8th show in Trois-Rivieres, QC and our May 18th show in Hamilton, ON to allow Hudson to take care of what he has to. This WILL NOT effect our June 6th date in Toronto with Kataklysm and Martyr, and we look forward to moving on and kicking some ass with you all at the Opera house!

Once again we apologize to everyone who was hoping to see us at these dates and we hope to make it up to you sooner than later!

A new intervierw that Jay did with Tennesee's "The Metal Show" has been posted in the media section. Thanks again to Chris for making it happen.

After the Straight Line Stitch interview late last month I began to notice a need for alot more depth in the 'views. It's just fair to everyone and especially to the bands!

With that in mind, I approached our next interview. I've had some 'here and there' contact with Jay of Senate since last year and he was willing to be my first target! Jay had a wealth of knowledge to share with us about the band, the Canadian metal scene, their release 'The Great Northern Scenekill', and just what it all means! We hope you'll enjoy it! -Chris

TMS: You've received great reviews from Metal Maniacs, Exlaim!, Blabbermouth, and many others and especially toward the quality of production on your debut. In fact, it's also been labeled as 'as the third best independent album of 2007'. What can you tell us about the direction of your late 2006 release 'The Great Northern Scenekill' and what metal fans who have not yet heard it can expect? Of note, there was a false sense of security in the Intro before my ears were kicked in by...

Happy 2008 To All!!

Just wanted to give you guys an update on what's going on in the Senate camp...Pat returned from a 2 month run with Despised Icon filling in for Alex on the drums, and we managed to squeeze in a show with Beneath The Massacre a couple days afterwards. The main business however is that we've been writing and demo-ing tunes for our next record! We're nearly half a dozen tunes in, and we have lots more ideas that just need to be arranged and recorded and I would say that things are progressing very well.

As far as the tunes go they are all quite different from each other, and quite different from the Scenekill record. Some are longer and more technical, a couple are shorter and more aggressive and a couple ideas are coming out very melodic, so it looks like its gonna be a much more diverse and interesting outing this time.

Some of the new titles are:

Everyone's a Christian On Their Deathbed
Sympathy For The Insects
The Whore
Vices
Speak Through Me

We're aiming to do some in studio preproduction in late March/Early April so you'll get a chance to hear some new ideas around then.
Anyways take care all and we'll see you soon!

Also a show review of our gig with Beneath The Massacre has appeared in Exclaim! Although nothing original, Senate do appeal instantly. Their album, a Canadian spin on Pantera's "The Great Southern Trendkill" might sucker you into believing this is a rip off, mimicking the former sludge masters but actually nothing could be farther from the truth. A new review from Exclaim! Magazine has been added. You can check it out on their website in the Aggressive Tendencies section or here in the media section.

It is a rare feat for a band to release a record that sounds this good, not only musically but especially production-wise, without the connections and cash that come with signing to a label. With members from Threat Signal and Martyr, and hailing from both Ontario and Quebec, the hidden gem that is The Great Northern Scenekill offers an invigorating twist in the ever-eclectic Canadian underground. Senate draw influence from the European melody meets thrash stylising of bands like Darkane but incorporate a distinct... read more here...

Hey all- just a quick update on what's been going on in the Senate camp. Matt welcomed a new addition to the family as he became a proud papa to Mikaia Kane in March, so the boys took 4 months off, other than a show or two here and there. But time waits for noone, and writing has commenced for the follow-up to "The Great Northern Scenekill". After a lengthy (and Painful $$$!!) upgrade of Matt's computer, songwriting has been going very well...the new tunes are faster, nastier and more technical and we'll leave it at that for now.

Senate will be heading up to Quebec in September to do some pre-pro with renowned producer/engineer Yannick St Amand (Despised Icon, Martyr) and you can all look forward to some new tunage by Hallowe'en.

Also, it looks like we'll have a slew of new tour dates to announce in the coming weeks, so keep your eyes peeled!

See you all soon,

Hey everyone, we've just returned from our first gig outside of Ontario, at Le Maquisart in Trois Rivières, Quebec, I have to say it went amazing! The crowds are crazy for metal in Quebec and we want to thank everyone who came out and thanks to Patrice, Jeff of Trois Rivieres Metal and Sam of Horifixion for putting us on the show! Thanks so much. Conisdering we're a band that was from out of the area, and the first band on we played to about 150 to 200 people and the crowd accepted us well. We'll be receiving photos and video footage soon. Which I'll post here shortly after.

I still have alot of photos to post from the Martyr tour as well, just with us being away from home, eight out of the past 11 days it's been hard to find time to edit everything. I'll be posting the Toronto date sometime today.

February 1st, 2007

I just wanted to give everyone an update, I've been slowly but surely adding a bunch of new photos from the Martyr tour we just finished. The Peterborough date is up and next will be Toronto. Last night Sean Palmerston (Sonic Unyon / Goodfellow Records) stopped by and we did an interview for Unrestrained Magazine thanks goes to him and Adrian "The Energizer" Bromley for making it happen. Look for it in the March issue, I'll be posting it here when it's been published.

This coming Friday we'll be packing up and heading down to Pat's home town of Trois Rivieres, Quebec to play with Brazilian death metal act Krisiun and Germany's brutal death/black band Belphegor. This is their North American debut and we're really excited to be doing this in Quebec. It'll be our first show out of Ontario and we're curious to see how the people of Quebec accept us.

See you on the other side!

Havoc In Ontario Post Mortem

Well we've come to the end of the Ontario mini-tour with Martyr, and I have to say that despite shitty weather, weird things happening here and there, and a couple rough turnouts this was a week to remember! We had a blast, made a lot of new friends, and hopefully a few new fans along the way!

Most importantly, we had the pleasure of playing with THE BEST TECHNICAL METAL BAND IN THE WORLD for a week straight. We learned a lot from those guys this week, and I think that we will take that into the future and use it in a very positive way. They were very supportive, awesome dudes and I speak for the entire band when I say that seeing everyone in Martyr wearing Senate shirts on stage in Hamilton was probably the highlight of my musical career, and it was very humbling as well.

I wanted to thank all the guys- Daniel, Francois, Martin and Pat for making this happen, as well as Jeff and Blackie (I never thought I would see the day that a legend of metal would be helping me with mic problems, beer problems etc. haha)…It was an honour and a privilege to spend a week with you guys!!! Also special thanks to Brent from NOC who put his ass on the line to make this show happen because he is a FAN of metal first, and a businessman second (and that is a beautiful thing).

Cheers and see you all soon

Well we kicked off the first date of our mini tour last night with Martyr in Oshawa and even though the turn out was smaller a good time was had and we enjoyed ripping it with all the bands that played last night

Also Sean Palmerston of Sonic Unyon / Goodfellow records sent me a link to an article he wrote for View Magazine, about Martyr and their stop in Hamilton and he also mentions some good things about us at the end. Heres' a link to the article.

Hey everyone a few updates here, first off thanks to Dennis and the guys at Metal-R.US we now have an official Senate forum moderated by the band and of course the guys at Metal-R.US. We appreciate the offer to do this and we hope this opens the band to a whole new fan base. Here's a link straight to the forum.

Also I've added an un-releaed track to the player in the media section, it was never finished and is a rough mix with no mastering but we decided to let you guys hear it anyways. The track is called "Speak To Me In Binary". Hope you enjoy it!

Lastly, I have serveral new photos that I'll be adding over the course of the week, so keep checking back. Cheers!

Well we're back in 2007 with the release of our debut album "The Great Northern Scenekill", a new website design, as well as an official announcement of our new bass player Colin Lernell! He's worked really hard in the past 4 weeks, with school and a last minute trip to Trois Rivieres to rehearse with Patrice for our upcoming 5 day mini tour with Martyr and Camilla Rhodes (on certain dates). He did a fantastic job and we welcome him to the band!

I'll be slowing adding more content to the site as I get it from the guys, don't be alarmed if things don't work quite properly. I'm still going to be tweaking over the next week or so. I felt the website was offline a little to long and wanted to get it back up and running!

Enjoy and we'll see you at a show soon!

Happy New Year!

Jay

FINALLY we are getting our shit organized regarding the release of our debut record 'THE GREAT NORTHERN SCENEKILL'. The record was recorded at Silo Studio with Producer Julius 'Juice' Butty (Alexison , Cancer Bats), nd Mastered by Tue Madsen (The Haunted, Kataklysm, Threat Signal). Album artwork is nearly complete and we are preparing to launch a website exclusive pre-sale of the record.

We are going to make an official announcement about everything next week sometime but what I can tell you now is that we are going to run a limited edition first pressing of the CD which will be entirely creatively controlled by the band featuring artwork and content chosen by us.

This edition will only be sold via our websites and at shows, and once its gone people will have to wait for the "official" version that hits stores in the near future.

So stay tuned for the official announcement next week!

Hey all, our masters arrived today all the way from Denmark today, due to the fact we enlisted the mastering skills of Tue Madsen (Kataklysm, Mnemic, The Haunted, Sick of it all) to do the album, and it sounds absolutely huge!

Check out the songs on our myspace and leave your comments. www.myspace.com/senatemetal As soon as I get a copy of the album from Matt I'll upload a few of the songs here!
